Interim Quality/Change Manager

Our clienbt provides Product Validation Solutions for use in the aerospace, defence, automotive, machinery, electrical and electronics markets. Using their solutions at the design and test phase, customers can prove product integrity, improving the reliability, safety, durability and efficiency of products. The company is an international business unit of a global company and is headquartered in Hertfordshire.

The Requirement

The company requires a Quality / Change Manager to support the Operations function as the Change Agent to achieve Operational Excellence. This will include working to reduce all operational waste and variability in the processes to deliver year on year cost reduction and improved business profitability.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Operations and as part of the new team, the Quality / Change Manager’s remit is as a driver and facilitator of step change in quality and to be a key program implementer for lean application.  You will need to have an exceptional level of customer focus both internally and externally.

You will need to use a bottom-up approach to enable production teams to take ownership of the lean processes and to deliver sustained continuous improvement.  Executing this strategy will require exceptional people skills.

As the company continues to grow and innovate, you will be instrumental in helping formulate quality/continuous improvement and lean operational strategies to increase effectiveness and drive excellence.

In addition, you will control and develop capital projects and deliver new processes linked to projects and product introduction.

The Person:

You are an individual with significant Quality / Lean experience, flexible in your approach, emotionally resilient, able to create your own structure and you thrive on constant challenge and change.

Because this role is a crucial part of an implementation program to achieve operational excellence you must have experience of the management of quality and the introduction of lean at all levels.

You will be degree qualified in an engineering science discipline, most likely mechanical, automotive or manufacturing and it is likely that you are currently working in a low volume or project based production environment, with a quality / lean engineering background.  Your background, training and experience will include a good grounding in and understanding of Lean improvement, including lean manufacturing.

You have experience in a customer facing role where delivering customer satisfaction is paramount.

A proven influencer with strong leadership skills, you will be a confident communicator and people developer, and your results focused approach will allow you to facilitate change through a team based culture.

Typical experience in Lean Manufacturing (5S, SOP, TOC, JIT & Kanban) / CI / MRP / Quality (6 Sigma) / Customer focused.

Key Objectives / Areas of Responsibility:


  • System management – oversee and coordinate the investigation of customer complaints, non-conforming product, quality management system non conformances, corrective and preventive actions.
  • Reporting to the Head of Operations – promote voice of the customer requirements and quality throughout the company and in their supply chain and service organizations.
  • Initiate improvement in cost of quality, lean and other appropriate metrics at our Royston site.
  • Assist Head of Operations in gathering quality and lean savings data
  • Initiate and manage Green Belt, Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping and other six sigma and lean initiatives
  • Ensure continuing certification to ISO9001:2000 and other standards at appropriate sites.
  • Define and implement product development and product introduction procedures within the company.
  • Able to represent the company both with key customers and other areas of the parent company
  • Embraces and demonstrates the Leadership Standards of the parent company
  • Creating and maintaining build instructions (SOP’s), line layouts & HSE requirements through team leaders/operational teams
  • Liaise with Cell leader to support cell as necessary
  • Leading/Implementing Lean Manufacturing
  • Value mapping the processes to remove unnecessary waste
  • Structured Problem solving & data analysis
  • Corrective action implementation responsibility for immediate fix and longer term solutions
  • Delivery of quality engineering solutions in response to hardware development, operational and manufacturing needs
  • Supporting NPI projects & DFM ensuring seamless changes and start-up 
  • Producing justifications for new plant and equipment
  • Define, measure, analyse, implement & set control for CI activities 
  • Implementation of Standard Work 
  • Supporting existing processing equipment
  • Specification of tooling and equipment required to support production
  • Determining and optimising product process flow
  • Resolving general day-to-day production issues 
  • Managing the implementation of engineering changes
  • Establish productive working relationships with R&D, Engineering’ Finance and Operational teams to maintain regular liaison to discuss issues and agree improvements
  • Experience with Visual Factory

General Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • The drive to continually change and improve quality and cost
  • Broad background in electro/mechanical product development, manufacture and test 
  • Proven success in a quality / change manager role within a high mix low volume manufacturing company. 
  • Ability to read and interpret electro/mechanical technical drawings 
  • Strong innovative problem solving skills 
  • Strong ‘design for manufacture’ skills 
  • Ability to work well under tight timescales and pressure 
  • The ability to work productively with others 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Good organisation skills for a demanding environment 
  • Attention to detail and quality 
  • Willingness to learn, improve and adapt with Initiative and drive 
  • Good knowledge of MRP based systems (preferably SAP/Oracle) & CAD design software
  • Good computer skills and competency in basic MS Office applications
